Protestant Theology

The aim of the Master Programme Protestant Theology at the University of Vienna is for students to gain in-depth knowledge and understanding of the diverse theological disciplines, to acquire the ability to judge complex theological issues, to be able to form socially and ethically correct judgments against the background of acquired knowledge, and to act accordingly.

Students further their exegetical, philological, historical, philosophical, systematic skills as well as their knowledge of the methods of human and social sciences.

Credit points: 120 ECTS in total

Protestant Religious Education

The Master Programme Religious Education majoring in "Protestant Religious Education" is designed to further the theological and pedagogical-didactic knowledge and skills students acquired in the Bachelor Programme. Graduates of Protestant Theology (MTh) may study Religious Education in order to gain the necessary skills and methods for teaching in primary and secondary schools.

Graduates of this programme may work as teachers of religion at higher schools, as theological-educational specialists in church and non-church institutions, in adult education, public relations, the media, etc. The general pedagogical, didactic, and practical school training thereby complements the theological professional education.

Teacher Education Programme "Protestant Religion"

The Teacher Education Master Programme "Protestant Religion" is designed to further the theological and pedagogical knowledge and skills acquired in the Bachelor Programme. Students gain a deeper understanding of pedagogical-didactic methods and skills for teaching as well as the methods of educational and social sciences and theology. The theoretical knowledge as well as the practical training equips them to effectively plan, hold and reflect upon lessons and gain a thorough understanding of the requirements regarding their professional role and tasks.

The Teacher Education Master Programme consists of two subjects or fields of specialization, for each of which a Master's thesis has to be written according to the regulations in the respective curriculum.

This program is a joint degree; student can enroll in courses offered by the University of Vienna, the University College of Teacher Education Vienna (PhWien) and Lower Austria (PhNoe), the University College for Teacher Education of Christian Churches (KPH Wien/Krems), and the University College for Agrarian and Environmental Pedagogy.

Religious Studies

The interdisciplinary Master's Program "Religious Studies" is designed to equip students with the methods of religious research and cultural studies. Students are to acquire techniques of depicting intercultural problems and to understand the processes of transcultural communication.

The coursework focuses on religious traditions, approaches, and theories. This includes in-depth study of the religious history of the world religions as well as ethnic, (pre-) historical and new religions, methods of comparative study of religious phenomena, intercultural dialogue and the problems and possibilities of intercultural social processes.
